Summer in the City

Summer's here and the time is right for San Francisco's young teens to aquire Fast Passes and learn about Muni. My 13 year old and his 14 year old friend decided to visit Chinatown (3 weeks ago) and with skateboaeds in hand continue on to the southern part of the Embarcadero to skate. A few days later I found an empty package in my garage of a Ninja Star. What's a Ninja Star? you may ask. It's metal, circular and has blades surrounding it. When popped open you can throw it like a frisbie and possibly take out someones eye or seriouly cut them depending upon your skill. Infuriated, I waited for him to return home. I'm a yeller not a hitter and when he returned promptly screamed at him and grounded him. He brought it to me. Fortunately he couldn't figure out how to open it and it was thrown in the garbage. His friend bought two switchblades. I asked where this store was as I decided to scream at the store owner prior to calling the police. My son responded that he didn't know and that all the stores in Chinatown sell this stuff. I kept yelling until my 17 yr. old interjected 'Mom, he's right, you can buy that stuff anywhere in Chinatown'. Fine, I thought. The next day I called Central Station and spoke with a 45 yr. old officer who did the same thing when he was 13. His parents reacted just like me. Then I called the DA's office. The DA I spoke with suggested I get the names of stores so that police don't have to go on a witch hunt.
A week later it was the fourth of July and I hosted a BBQ for my daughter's friends. There were about 15 teenagers and I asked 'Where's Roisen?' Roisen is one of my daughter's best friends and one of my favorite's. She had other plans I was told. You may have read about Roisen or seen her on the news. You may have seen my daughter in her hospital room on the news too. Roisen is a brillant, beautiful girl who skipped a grade (could have skipped two) is a drummer in all girl punk rock band and will start college at Dominican on a full scholarship this fall. She wants to be a biology teacher.
Roisen was at Dolores Park watching fireworks and chatting with a girlfriend while sitting on the lawn. A sub-human threw a M1000 in her friends purse. It blew the skin off her right hand and she hand her index finger amputated. She's still in the hospital. Nice way to start college........
If my son and his friend had been caught with these weapons it would ruin thier school future. By law, kids are expelled for a year, enrolled in a Continuation and then if they return to school are put on probation for a year. If they are even tardy they can be expelled. That's the difference between the time the cop was 13 and now. We had Columbine etc. The law has changed and it applies to private as well as public school.
What I want to know is this.......who sold the M1000 to the creep that mutilated Roisen. Was it the same creep that sold my son and his freind weapons? I want the SFPD to stop these people from selling and mutilating our children.
I took a drive over to Chinatown last week. My son has a 15 year old friend that joined us and I have a list of stores to give to the police, then to the DA. I'll publish my results.
Sincerely,
Janet a fifth generation San Franciscan and concerned mom
